Rich people who tell us not to work too hard
Seems like “stop working hard" is the new mantra. Lots of (rich) people talking about it, and preaching it to the world. Yes, I’m overgeneralizing their posts, and that is not what they’re technically saying. But that is the overarching theme. The problem is, I have yet to hear this advice from someone who started from the bottom and did not overwork themselves. Meaning, lots of these people do that now or transitioned at some point, but they never started out working reasonable hours.
This advice doesn’t work if you’re not rich and you’re working on a startup. The reality is, you have to put in a ridiculous number of hours in order to get to the point where you don’t have to. There’s too much to do, and those of us just starting have more to do than we have time to do those things. Once you’ve got a bunch of employees and money in the bank, there’s a stronger case for not overworking, I probably won’t overwork as often.
But when you’re just starting out with a small team, you should be working your ass off, push yourself to your limits. That doesn’t mean kill yourself. Get your eight hours of sleep. Take a few hours every day to relax and bs. Take one day off per week to clear your head, go on a date, or just read. But work your ass off.
You may ultimately fail, but it won’t be because you worked too hard.
